Coin Story

Alexander II was the most successful Russian reformer since Peter the Great. His most important achievement was the emancipation of serfs in 1861, for which he became known as Alexander the Liberator. The Tsar was responsible for numerous other reforms. Despite the reforms during his reign, his brutal secret police, known as the Third Section, sent thousands of dissidents into exile in Siberia. In foreign policy, Alexander sold Alaska to the United States in 1867, fearing the remote colony would fall into British hands if there were another war. Alexander was proposing additional parliamentary reforms, to counter the rise of nascent revolutionary and anarchistic movements, when he was assassinated in 1881.

Reign: 2. March 1855 – 13. March 1881
Coronation: 7 September 1855
Predecessor: Nicholas I
Successor: Alexander III

Reverse Design

The coin depicts the Emperor Alexander II. The character offsets itself from the finely engraved background, due to the applied color. Also, the coin is embellished with 24k gold-plating and two blue crystals. The name of the Emperor, as well as the number of the coin, is punched into the edge of the coin.

Obverse Design

The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is surrounded by beautiful ornaments, which give the coin a very special touch.

The coin comes inside an elegant and rich wooden box, which is made from parts of real Karelian Birch. It is in a beautiful case, which is doing a great job in staging this remarkable coin. The Certificate of Authenticity (matching the number of the coin) is displayed on the inner packaging.
