Coin Story

Apart from the fairy tales which are well-known around the world, the Fairy Tales series also presents national fairy tales with a universal message. The images on the coins are little gems which capture many symbols due to which the fairy tales are no more ordinary narratives but touch upon the world of magic.

Turandot is a play written by Carlo Gozzi in 1762. The play is a history of a Chinese princess – Turandot who vows never to surrender to a man. To avoid marriage, she asks each potential husband to solve three extremely difficult puzzles. If the man fails to solve them, he is sentenced to death. In the end, she falls victim to her own feelings.

Reverse Design

In the center of the coin - an image of the main fairy tale heroine – princess Turandot, in the background – a stylized curtain which symbolizes puzzles of princess Turandot, behind it – the tree of life, and on the left – an image of the lion of Adria. In the upper part of the coin - a semicircular Belarusian inscription saying “Turandot” which is located in the background of a stylized Chinese fan. Instead of the letter “O” in the inscription - a light orange zircon which represents the sun – another puzzle of princess Turandot. On the right – the interior of the palace.

Obverse Design

The central part of the coin depicts a boy and a girl sitting on the moon and reading fairy tales with stars in the background. Above: the emblem of the Republic of Belarus and a semicircular inscription in Russian saying: “Republic of Belarus”. In the lower part of the coin, along the rim, there is the face value of the coin in Belarusian – “twenty roubles”. Above there is the year of issue: 2008.
