Coin Story

Apart from the fairy tales which are well-known around the world, the Fairy Tales series also presents national fairy tales with a universal message. The images on the coins are little gems which capture many symbols due to which the fairy tales are no more ordinary narratives but touch upon the world of magic.

Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll published in 1871 is a sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. One winter evening, the main heroine goes through a secret mirror and enters a parallel world where everything is the other way round. The girl is fascinated by creatures and plants living there. After many adventures in the mirror world, she wakes up and discovers it has been a dream.

Reverse Design

On the right - the main heroine of Lewis Carroll’s novel – Alice who holds the White Knight in her hands. At the top of the coin - an ornament which, in a row, presents the characters of the story, below it – an inset of amber in the shape of an egg which represents Humpty Dumpty from the book. In the center of the coin there is a chessboard with pieces on it and on the right, along the rim – a semicircular inscription in Belarusian reflected in the mirror: “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There”.

The reverse of the coin interestingly matches the reverse of the coin Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland because if put side by side, the two coins form a picture – Alice’s face with a stretched hand in a reflection in the mirror.

Obverse Design

The central part of the coin depicts a boy and a girl sitting on the moon and reading fairy tales with stars in the background. Above: the emblem of the Republic of Belarus and a semicircular inscription in Russian saying: “The Republic of Belarus”. In the lower part of the coin, along the rim - the face value of the coin in Belarusian – “twenty roubles”. Above - the year of issue: 2007.

The Fairy Tales - Through the Looking-Glass silver coin comes encapsuled, with a Certificate of Authenticity.
