Coin Story

The humpback whale is one of the largest mammals in the sea. These whales migrate up to 25,000 kilometers each year to tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter. This journey takes them through the pacific where they visit the Pitcairn Islands and New Zealand. There are around 80,000 humpback whales worldwide. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, humpbacks are now sought out by whale-watchers, particularly in the south pacific.

Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales range in length from 12—16 meters and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms. They possess a distinctive body shape that is reflected in their name which describes the motion they make as they arch their back out of the water in preparation for a dive.

Reverse Design

This features a dramatic image of a humpback whale with fins outstretched, breaching (leaping out of the water). This action is common during the mating and calving seasons when the large mammals become highly curious and excited. Around this image are the words 'Humpback Whale' and 'Whales From The Pitcairn Islands'. The silver purity and weight is likewise engraved on this face.

Obverse Design

The obverse of the coin features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the year of issue (2009), and the denomination of $2.

This beautiful coin comes uniquely packaged in a compact box featuring 3-dimensional water ripples that flow across the top like the sea where this amazing mammal lives. A silhouette of two humpback whales also features on the top of the box in silver. Each coin comes complete with a certificate of authenticity issued by New Zealand Mint.
