Coin Story

The Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio Machaon) adorns the already existent third version of this 3D technique - another beautiful butterfly which seems to be flying away with the coin. The Papilio Machaon is one of the most common butterflies still alive in Europe. Its wingspan extends up to 75 mm. It has very delicately formed wings which are patterned black and yellow. On its hind wings the butterfly is marked with red eyespots. In Europe the Swallowtail butterfly has several flight times (generations) which last from April to September. It is not only widespread in Europe but also in Asia. In North America several subspecies are found.

Reverse Design

The reverse depicts a Papilio Machaon butterfly. The butterfly is very detailed and sits on the coin, giving it 3D optics. The coin features a beautiful flower, which offsets itself against the silver proof background.

Obverse Design

Each coin features the Principality of Andorra coat of arms. The name of the issuing nation ‘PRINCIPAT D'ANDORRA’ appears along the top edge and the face value of ‘5 Diner’ is indicated in the exergue.

The Exotic Butterflies in 3D - Papilio Machaon coin comes encapsuled with a Certificate of Authenticity.
