Coin Story

The Ama Dablam, which is covered in snow throughout the year, protrudes high above the Nepalese cloud cover. It is known for its technically challenging ascent, however many mountaineers take the risk upon themselves. It’s beautiful shape helped give the 6856 m mountain its nickname “Nepal’s Matterhorn“. Snow covered throughout the year and jutting above the clouds, the Ama Dablam is a part of the Himalayan Mountain range in Nepal. Together with a smaller 5563 m adjacent peak it forms “The mother and her necklace“ (Sanskrit: Ama Dablam) in Mahalangur Himal in the Khumbu region. It is not permitted to mount the Ama Dablam without official authorisation from the Nepalese government. Besides, a liaison officer has to be present during the ascent. The first climbers did not abide by these rules and tried to reach the peak without permission. On March 13th, 1961 Mike Gill, Barry Bishop and Michael Ward did indeed reach the uppermost spot on the Ama Dablan but the Nepalese government broke off the expedition immediately. Unbeknown to the group leader Sir Edmund Hillary, the three mountaineers left the group and crested the mountain. Once he had paid a fine, the adventure on the slope of Ama dablam was able to be continued.
