Coin Story

The “Bay Tree Egg” was made in 1911. This extraordinary piece was modeled after the 18th century French mechanical instrument in the shape of an orange tree, hence another name for the egg – the Orange Tree Egg. The top part presents the crown of a bay tree made of 325 nephrite leaves, 110 white enameled flowers, 25 diamonds, 20 rubies, 53 pearls, 219 rose cut diamonds, and one large rose cut diamond. The leaves conceal a small keyhole and a tiny lever which starts a mechanical singing bird. The tree trunk is made of pure gold, textured as tree bark. The tree is placed in a white tub, covered with a gold fretwork, ornamented with chains of enameled bay leaves, rubies and diamonds. Each of the corners of the tub is crowned with a pearl. The whole rests upon a square nephrite base. The corners feature small columns covered with a gold canopy, with a pearl on top. Between them there are gold chains, also ornamented with pearls and small, green enameled leaves.

Reverse Design

In the central part – the stylized image of the original "Bay Tree Egg" decorated with four rosy Swarovski crystals. At the top, along the edge - the name of the series in English: IMPERIAL FABERGÉ EGGS. In the background – the floral ornament.

Obverse Design

At the bottom – open Spring Flowers Egg (1899-1903) with a miniature basket of wood anemones inside. Above – the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the mint’s mark (m/w) and the inscription “ELIZABETH II” below. Around the Queen’s effigy – decorative neorococo scroll ornament. At the top – the issuer’s name: NIUE ISLAND. On the right – a nominal value of the coin (2 dollars), on the left – year of issue (2012).
