Coin Story

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit was born on May 24th, 1686 in Gdansk. He was a Prussian physicist and the inventor of measuring instruments. Fahrenheit was the first scientist who succeeded in creating a calibrated thermometer. It was this calibration which allowed the serial production of thermometers. The temperature unit «degrees Fahrenheit» was named after him. On September 16th, 1736 the scientist died at the age of only fifty.

Reverse Design

The reverse captures a Thermometer (in Fahrenheit), which is actually working. The scale ranges from 57 degrees up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. You will also find the image of an actual Thermometer, as well as Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheits Signature, on the centrepiece of the coin.

Obverse Design

The front of the coin depicts the South Sea Island of Palau’s coat of arms. The name of the issuing nation ‘REPUBLIC OF PALAU’ appears along the top edge and the face value of ‘5 $’ is indicated in the exergue.

The Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit coin comes in a specially designed box (celebrating 300 years of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit) with a Certificate of Authenticity.
