Coin Story

Ginger Rogers (16.7.1911-25.4.1995) actually Virginia Katherine McMath, was a dancing talent and already appeared in musicals on Broadway at the age of 14. Her box-office success led to her first film contract with the Paramount Studios. She accomplished her breakthrough as a partner of the dance genius Fred Astaire. This dancing couple made the most successful blockbuster movies during the 30’s. Nevertheless, Ginger Rogers was anxious to pursue her own career. In 1940 she unexpectedly received an Oscar for her role in Kitty Foyle. In the 50’s she tended more towards the theatre again. On Broadway Rogers was celebrated as the star in the musical Hello Dolly. She was married five times and in the 60’s she retired into private life. Her name also adorns on a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Despite obscurity and lack of funds, Bruno Bernard (1912-1987) set up his first darkroom in the basement of his Hollywood apartment in 1940. Shortly thereafter, he moved his studio to the famous Sunset Strip. “No one knew the name Bernard, but they all knew Hollywood“, and hence the optical trademark signature Bernard of Hollywood, which ensured the image of glamour visually for decades, was created.

Bruno Bernard was considered as “The king of Hollywood glamour” and Marilyn Monroe’s discoverer. In 1984 Bernard was the first still photographer to be honoured with an Oscar at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
