Coin Story

The Potala Palace in Lhasa is a UNESCO World Heritage since 1994 and was built in several construction phases. The palace construction began in 637 by Songtsen Gampo, the king in Tibet at that time. The building was a present for his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. In the 17th century the palace was integrated in a bigger construction. At the beginning of the 20th century the last important structural measures took place. Today the palace is used as a museum and among the Tibetan Buddhists it is considered an important pilgrimage site.

Reverse Design

The reverse depicts the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The Palace is finely engraved into the background of the coin. Parts of it, as well as the surroundings, offset themselves against the silver proof background, due to the applied color. The image is very detailed and beautifully designed.

Obverse Design

The front of the coin depicts the South Sea Island of Palau’s coat of arms – a sea god with a mermaid and a boat typical of Oceania. The name of the issuing nation ‘REPUBLIC OF PALAU’ appears along the top edge and the face value of ‘5 $’ is indicated in the exergue.

The World of Wonders Potala Palace coin comes encapsuled with a Certificate of Authenticity.
