Coin Story

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic, the Republic of the Fiji Islands has issued a silver coin to commemorate this legendary ship. This 5 oz coin consists of pure silver and its inner core is made out of real mother of pearl, a reference to the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean where the ship now rests in peace. Its mintage is strictly limited to only 750 pieces worldwide.
The RMS Titanic was an Olympic-class passenger liner owned by the White Star Line. For her time, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world. On the night of 14 April 1912, during her maiden voyage, Titanic hit an iceberg and sank two hours and forty minutes later, early on 15 April 1912. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people, making it one of the most deadly peacetime maritime disasters in history. The ship could carry a total of 3,547 passengers and crew and, because she carried mail, her name was given the prefix RMS (Royal Mail Steamer) as well as SS (Steam Ship). At the time, the Titanic was the largest moving object on the planet and was touted as being unsinkable with a loss of over 1500 lives. The drama of the sinking ship became the subject of many books, technical literature and speculation. Numerous movies have been made about the tragic event, spreading the myth of the Titanic around the world. The RMS Titanic Incorporation holds the sole rights to salvage items from the wreck. A total of seven diving expeditions have been mounted, bringing to the surface more than 6000 memorable artefacts. During the campaign in the year 2000, sizeable pieces of coal where salvaged from the wreck in the depth as well.

Reverse Design

The reverse captures the RMS Titanic and the iceberg. The ship is completely made of mother of pearl (engraved into it), while the iceberg is partially engraved into the silver coin. The name of the ship "R.M.S. Titanic", as well as the denomination of the coin "$50" is also displayed on this side of the coin.

Obverse Design

The obverse features Ian-Rank Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the issuing nation "Fiji Islands".

The Titanic 100th Anniversary Transatlantic Mother of Pearl silver coin comes encapsulated and with an unique timber frame to keep and exhibit the coin. You will also get a certificate of authenticity designed as an original Titanic “Boarding Pass” with serial number and an original Titanic Stock Certificate from the International Mercantile Marine Company, which was the owner of the White Star Line that manufactured the Titanic.
