Coin Story

"Orchids" coins are dedicated to the plants native to the different regions of the world. "Platanthera bifolia orchid" commonly known as the Lesser Butterfly orchid occurs from Ireland in the West, across Europe and Asia to Korea and Japan. It is also found in North Africa as well as in Russia, on the outskirts of Moscow. The name Platanthera is derived from Greek, meaning "broad anthers", while the species name, bifolia, means "two leaves". The coin will be available in October 2013. A set of 3 coins in a gift box will be also available.

Reverse Design

The reverse features a colorised image of Phalaenopsis pulcherrima yellow flowers, on the foreground . On the background engraved image of Taj Mahal - marble mausoleum located in Agra (Uttar Pradesh, India). It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal (UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983). Inscriptions: a latin name of the flower "Phalaenopsis pulcherrima" and the hallmark "Ag 925".

Obverse Design

The obverse features the standard effigy of Elizabeth II. Inscriptions: "Elizabeth II" , "Niue Island" as well as "2013" and "One dollar".
