Coin Story

Apart from the fairy tales which are well-known around the world, the Fairy Tales series also presents national fairy tales with a universal message. The images on the coins are little gems which capture many symbols due to which the fairy tales are no more ordinary narratives but touch upon the world of magic.

The Little Prince written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1943 is a fairy tale for both children and adults and is overflowed with allegorical meanings and touches upon universal truths: the sense of love, need for responsibility for another person, the value of friendship, and the passing of time.

Reverse Design

Two semicircles are symbols of two worlds – two planets separated by the chasm of a desert. On one of them, there is the title Little Prince, on the other – his friends: a fox and a rose. A profile of the Little Prince’s face is formed by: an artifact stands for an eye, mountain ridge – an eyebrow, star – a mouth, and small stars representing tears. The image portrays loneliness: the friends are far away from each other but, at the same time, they keep an eye contact which epitomizes the ties of friendship. At the top of the coin - a semicircular inscription in Belarusian saying: “The Little Prince”.

Obverse Design

The central part of the coin depicts a boy and a girl sitting on the moon and reading fairy tales with stars in the background. Above: the emblem of the Republic of Belarus and a semicircular inscription in Russian saying: ”The Republic of Belarus”. At the bottom, along the rim - the face value of the coin in Belarusian – “twenty roubles”. Above - the year of issue: 2005
