Coin Story

The Goliath Birdwing (Ornithoptera goliat) is the second largest butterfly in the world. Extremely rare, lives in rainforests of New Guinea. Thanks to the pad printing technique the image reflects the genuine butterfly colour on the coin.

Reverse Design

In the central part of the coin, a stylized likeness of the butterfly against the rainforest. To the right, the inscription: ORNITHOPTERA GOLIAT (Latin name for the butterfly).

Obverse Design

In the central part of the coin, a likeness of the Queen Elizabeth II. Below, the Mint’s mark: M/W. Around it the inscription: ELIZABETH II 1 DOLLAR. Along the rim of the coin, at the top, the inscription: NIUE ISLAND 2012. In the background, a stylized enlarged fragment of a butterfly wing.

The Butterflies - Goliath Birdwing silver coin comes encapsuled, with a Certificate of Authenticity.
