Coin Story

Persepolis belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage and is an old Persian residential city near Shiraz which originated around 520 B.C. Back then, on an area of 15 ha, 14 buildings were erected by Darius I and his successors. After existing for 200 years Persepolis was nearly completely destroyed by Alexander the Great. Only at the beginning of the 20th century specific excavations were made. In 1971 Persepolis was partly restored and made accessible for tourists. To this day the palace city is an identification location for many Iranians although it reaches way back into the pre Islamic period.

Reverse Design

The reverse depicts the city of Persepolis. The ruins are finely engraved into the background of the coin. The parts of it offset themselves against the silver proof background, due to the applied color. The image is very detailed and beautifully designed.

Obverse Design

The front of the coin depicts the South Sea Island of Palau’s coat of arms – a sea god with a mermaid and a boat typical of Oceania. The name of the issuing nation ‘REPUBLIC OF PALAU’ appears along the top edge and the face value of ‘5 $’ is indicated in the exergue.

Packaging

The World of Wonders Persepolis Shiraz coin comes encapsuled with a Certificate of Authenticity.
