Coin Story

Meteorite showers, which fall toward the earth, occur daily. However, only some make it to the surface of our planet. Most of them disintegrate in the atmosphere. The discoveries of these meteorites are special on every occasion. By coincidence, two boys discovered this special meteorite from outer space in Muonionalusta, Sweden. The meteorite in question is the fine octahedrite class IVA. On closer inspection the texture of the surface catches one‘s eye first. The very technical looking structure is attained by an extremely slow cooling down from 1 to 100 degrees per million years - an unimaginably slow process. The Widmanstätten patterns, (also called Thomson structures) named after the Austrian natural scientist Alois Widmanstätten (1754-1849), are only visible when treated with nitric acid. These unique structures cannot be reproduced artificially and are, therefore, a clear identifying feature for meteorite iron.

Reverse Design

The reverse captures the meteorite going down in Muonionalusta. The area is finely engraved into the coin, while the lake and the universe are coloured. There is also an original piece of the meteorite included in the reverse of the coin.

Obverse Design

Each coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the denomination of the coin.

Packaging

The Muonionalusta Meteorite coin comes ecapsuled with the Certificate of Authenticity.
