Coin Story

The highest mountain in Ecuador, the Chimborazo, measures 6310 m. Originally it was a volcano which last erupted about 1500 years ago. Thus it is officially inactive. For the indigenous population living in the vicinity; Mount Chimborazo is sacred. Nonetheless, the ascent is permitted. On January 4th, 1880 a British-Italian roped party were the first to reach the summit. The Chimborazo is a part of Ecuador’s national coat of arms.

Reverse Design

The reverse captures the Chimborazo. The mountain is finely engraved into the silver proof coin. In the bottom right corner of the coin you will find the signature flora of the region.

Obverse Design

The front of the coin depicts the South Sea Island of Palau’s coat of arms. The name of the issuing nation ‘REPUBLIC OF PALAU’ appears along the top edge and the face value of ‘5 $’ is indicated in the exergue.
