Coin Story

The 2013 Gemstone Edition from the Australian Lunar Series II celebrates the snake, the sixth of the twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar.
In Chinese culture, people born in the Year of the Snake - 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2013 - are regarded as intelligent, graceful, independent, analytical and charming.
A superb gift or collectable, the coin is meticulously struck by The Perth Mint from one kilo of 99.9% pure silver in specimen quality. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, no more than 5,000 coins will be issued worldwide.

Reverse Design

The coin’s reverse depicts a black and yellow snake curled around a tree branch. The snake has a stunning black diamond set in one of its eyes. The Chinese character for ‘snake’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Snake’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

Obverse Design

The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2013 year-date are shown on the coin’s obverse.

The Year of the Snake Gemstone Edition coin is housed in a black and red presentation case and custom-designed shipper, accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
