Coin Story

The kangaroo is a marsupial from the family Macropodidae. In common use the term is used to describe the largest species from this family, especially those of the genus Macropus: the red kangaroo, antilopine kangaroo, eastern grey kangaroo and western grey kangaroo. Kangaroos are endemic to Australia, and one genus, the tree-kangaroo, is also found in Papua New Guinea. The Australian government estimates that 34.3 million kangaroos lived in Australia in 2011, up from 25.1 million one year earlier.

Reverse Design

For outstanding impact, the coin is made with an extra-deep blank to accommodate its superbly detailed high relief design. This great annual release gets better every year, and this year’s unique design features a kangaroo set in the outback with a bush scene and windmill. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2012 year-date are also incorporated into the design.

Obverse Design

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.

The Australian Kangaroo 2012 High Relief silver coin is housed in a display case and beautifully illustrated shipper. It also comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
