Coin Story

In this area, the Amber Route passed through the Moravian Gate, Kłodzko Valley and across the Wrocław plain passing the Ślęza river, which, due to its exceptional placement – a desolate hill, clearly visible from the distance, served the bearing point purpose. The crossing of the Odra river probably took place near Wrocław. This area was an important stage of the amber route, which, on the barbarian land, was a step-by-step trade – from one trading post to another. Such an important trading center must have been placed in the settlement in Partynice, discovered in 1930’s (today a district of Wrocław). The discoveries made there included, among other things, three amber stocks of impressive total weight of 1.5 tons. Such incredible amount of amber reveals the real scale of its trade. The Partynice settlement dates back to the turn of the centuries and is also connected with the inter-tribal Celtic trade.

Reverse Design

At the top of the coin – Wrocław City Hall, which is the most distinctive landmark of Wrocław. Underneath, to the left – a Roman coin dating back to the times of the existence of the Amber Route, found near Wrocław, next to it – amber insertion. On the left side of the coin – a sculpture of the knight with the sword and spear from the City Hall elevation. At the top, along the rim – semicircular inscription in Polish – Szlak Bursztynowy (Amber Route). At the top – the inscription “Wrocław”.

Obverse Design

In the centre, a stylized image of a cart, in which ambers were carried by the Romans from Baltic Sea to Italy. Behind the cart, on the left, a stylized image of a head of the Roman. On the background, a stylized image of a map with Baltic Sea outline. At the top, along the edge, a semicircular inscription: AMBER ROUTE. At the bottom, a semicircular inscription: NIUE ISLAND; above it, a nominal value: 1 Dollar. An image of the Queen Elizabeth II with the Mint’s mark (m/w), on the left of the cart. On the right of the Queen’s head, an inscription: ELIZABETH II; under it, a year of issue: 2009.
